Fougaro - Theophilos, the gate-keeper of painting, Sunday, March 3rd 2024

ζωγραφική Θεόφιλου, Theophilos Greek folk painting

In the context of the theatrical performance "Theophilos" directed by Olia Lazaridou, which will be presented in March 2024 at the Fougaro Art Center, an art history lecture by Venia Pastaka takes place dedicated to the life and work of Theophilos, on Sunday, March 3rd 2024 at the Library.

The skirt-wearing painter, who with his Greek traditional "foustanela" garment filled with brushes instead of weapons, painted the walls of the shops in Volos, Pelion and Mytilene, in exchange for a plate of food and shelter, constitutes a distinct chapter in the history of modern Greek art.
In the tribute, which will be carried out by the art historian Mrs. Venia Pastaka, we will explore his almost mythical life and admire his colorful painted world. We will talk about his inspired representations from folk tradition, history, mythology, and also about the way they were rendered, aiming to understand the unique work of this great artist.
