A really nice hotel has appeared in the heart of Nafplio in the summer of 2014, a place that hides a piece of history of the city, while at the same time reveals the dynamism and hospitality of nowadays.
I pass through Syntagma square, walk a few meters to the “Vasileos Konstantinou” pedestrian street and turn right into the small alley of Kokkinou street. The stylish board «999 Luxury hotel» is quite evident, impossible to miss. I climb the rather high staircase, my feet step firmly on the paved carpet and I arrive on the first floor.
Owners specializing in reconstructions
Theodore Kavadias is waiting for me there, a young engineer who’s family company “Estia” undertook the reconstruction of this old building of 1830 and turned it into a subtract styled elegant hotel. Like he says, "from all the restorations we have undertaken, this building happened to be the most dammaged!". And they have renovated quite a lot, around 90 buildings in the city of Nafplio!
Waiting for him to settle some unfinished business at the receprion desk, I observe the nice and cozy breakfast area, with the small tables and buffet, but also the small terrace outside, with the large umbrellas, ideal to enjoy your morning coffee.
With abstraction and high standard of aesthetics
If one had to find a single word to describe the 999 Lux. Hotel, this would definitely be the "frugality". The abstraction leaves the eye to rest, “quiet” colors make you calm, the minimal touches of color are enough to make up your mood while some elements such as antique furniture or even the white embroidered curtains on the windows unite us with the past in the most discreet way.
Rooms that capture your heart
The hotel is spread over two floors and the rooms are characterized by a common style and elements, with the same gentle, sweet pistachio walls, with ceiling fans, with orange stucco in the bathrooms with the showers, with plain, simple furniture, with shutters half opening, made in the traditional way. The first floor rooms have small balconies overlooking Staikopoulou str, where you can enjoy your breakfast watching the people walking up and down the street (instantly picturing the mistress of the house, when she was waving saying hello at the other ladies of the neighborhood).
On the first floor, where 5 of the 9 rooms are located, I distinguish No. 104 due to its size. This is a two-room suite of 38 m², which can accommodate a couple on a special occasion (perfect for the first wedding night) or even a family with children. But I cannot fail to also notice the room No. 101 with its traditional wooden ceiling, with a beam that was maintained as it used to be in the old days.
Going a level up...
To get to the 2nd floor, you are also climbing a light-colored staircase with red carpet and –surprisingly- arriving in a long, 25-meter-long hallway, covered with a grimson carpet. Here the sun enters with all his splendor through the large windows lined in a row, that resemble like a huge glass window. In a corner, an old “Singer” sewing machine makes friends with two antique chairs while at one end of the corridor stands an old commode with an old radio on and a mirror, charming remnants of the past. Along the corridor, there are four comfortable rooms with distinctive décor and elegant furnishing featuring the “999 Luxury hotel”.
Its name is unique, it is easily remembered, it is recognizable to both Greek and foreign tourists. Apart from the Greek Revolution's chronology, 999 is probably the number that characterizes more the city of Nafplio, and in particular the steps that one needs to climb up to reach Palamidi castle. These steps are actually fewer and the number 999 lies in a myth, but it is certain that this new hotel will build its own legend in the first capital of Greece! Believe me, you have got to visit it!
You can visit and enjoy your coffee or drink on the terrace of the hotel, even if you do not stay here!
Did you know that?
Breakfast (which was included in the room rate and included coffee, juice, cake and sausages, cheeses, pastries and yoghurt) was served on a daily basis... following a Greek time: from 8am to almost 12pm! Due to Covid-19, unfortunately it has now stopped being offered.
The hotel prices are value for money.
The logo was based on a linear design and reveals in the finest way the professional status of his owners.
The historic building was built by the first mayor of Nafplio, Mr. Kokkinos, under which the street in front of the hotel was named (Kokkinou str.).
