The Municipal Organization of Culture in collaboration with the Theatrical Group of the Gate of Culture of Nafplio present "To Christopsomo" (The Christmas-Bread) by Alexandros Papadiamantis, adapted and directed by Mrs. Emilia Valvi, on December 17th, 18th, 22nd and 23rd 2022 at the Old Parliament's building (Vouleftiko) in Nafplio.

The story
Dialechti and Captain Kantakis have been married for years and have no children. The groom's mother and "the whole world" put the blame on the woman, for the "impotence". One Christmas Eve, when the captain is stranded in the north, the mother-in-law, offers her daughter-in-law a Christmas-bread, just to eat it, get poisoned and die. The community, the village, the neighborhood, the people "next door", watch and participate, speak or do not speak, keep silent and act... Some still ask "What was the fault of the unfortunate young Dialecti?" What was the fault of captain Kantakis? Who is to blame for the poison, the murder, the cruelty and the evil?

After "The Chekhov Express", the Theatrical Group of the Gate of Culture of Nafplio, in its second production, presents a show about people, their stories and passions, Mrs. Emilia Valvi tells us.

Did you know that?
"Christopsomo" (The Christmas-Bread) is a Christmas short story by Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911), first published on December 26th 1887 in the newspaper named "Efimeris". It remained forgotten until Christmas 1941, when it was presented with a foreword and annotation by the philologist Georgios Valleta, in the "Nea Estia" magazine (SanSimera.gr).
Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911) was a Greek short story writer, poet, journalist and translator, one of the most important figures in modern Greek literature. The house he was born and lived in Skiathos island, has been preserved and can be visited as a Museum, thanks to Mrs. Melina Merkouris, as Minister of Culture.
"Christopsomo" is a round loaf of bread, which Greek housewives prepare 2-3 days before Christmas, especially for this great religious celebration. The difference with other common breads is its rich decoration, with various embroidery of dough or with nuts, mainly with a cross in the middle.
The performance is co-organised by the Municipality of Nafplio and the Municipal Organization for Culture, Environment and Sports (DOPPAT), together with the theatrical group of the Gate of Culture of Nafplio.
