Trianon - Psychology of a Syrian Husband: Christina, December 27-29th 2022

Christmas night in Nafplio, νύχτα Χριστούγεννα στο Ναύπλιο

The play "Psychology of a Syrian Husband: Christina", based on the homonymous novel by Emmanuel Roidis, directed by G. Leontaris, is presented at the Trianon Theater in Nafplion, on December 27th, 28th and 29th 2022, while it will also be performed in the Alexander the Great Hall in Argos, on the 30th of December 2022.

The story
Syros island, 1894. The husband and Christina. A man decides to marry the love object of his desire, so that he can stop being in love. Christina "steals" his thoughts and reveals them to the audience. The man -present and absent on stage- struggles to "bury" his love. Friendship, lust, humor, jealousy and the revealing of all the male stereotypes about love and marriage...
The work "immerses" in the male psyche, to comment on aspects of the romantic encounter and the married life: possessiveness, eroticism, devotion, passion, boredom, doubt, jealousy, infidelity. The male voice is heard through a female body, breaking down stereotypes and commenting on the absence of the female voice, then and today.
The excellent hilarious novella "Psychology of a Syrian Husband" by Emmanuel Roidis has been presented several times on the Greek theatrical stage. It is the first time however, that the play is performed by a woman.

Did you know that?
Emmanuel Roidis (June 28th 1836 - January 7th 1904), born in Ermoupolis, the capital of Syros island, was an important Greek writer and essayist. He is considered one of the most witty writers to appear in Greek letters, and his work covers many different genres, such as the novel, the short story, critical studies, political texts, translations and chronography. Roidis' short stories take place in Athens and Ermoupolis and are mainly based on his personal experiences. His critical attitude towards social and political reality is evident in everything (Wikipedia).
The show is co-organized by the Hermionian Theater Group and the Municipal & Cultural Organization of Nafplio. It is held under the auspices of the Department of Theatrical Studies of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Peloponnese.
