The Nea Kios Memorial Committee of the Municipality of Argos-Mycenae presents the performance "One step back", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor catastrophe. A show that starts as a real testimony. Indeed, it was given to Nikos Roumpakis and he transformed it into a performance, with his dramatic tools and fiction.
We see the transfer of the testimony-performance come to life in front of the spectators, who all participate in a recording-documentary, while the scenography leads us to the action and the direct intervention of the audience.
Our story presents the last New Year's Eve in Smyrna, told by the descendant of a family. Eve of 1922…His memories come to life, from narrators who turn into faces and heroes, who left indelible moments in his life, as passing from "there to here", from Smyrna to Mytilene, he lost all his beloved family members and his first love , leaving them "behind, at the bottom" of Smyrna, along with hundreds of "lifeless bodies of Greeks". The joy, the emotion, the sadness and the pain of the uprooting, the loss but also the new beginning with the survival and the installation, is the emotional mosaic that the performance composes.
The documentary is dramatically recorded by the camera of the journalist-reporter, who mainly "opens the door" for the testimony and unravels the tangle of the story, making the viewers share the events.
The voices and melodies are heard by Mario Karachalios and Rania Koutrouli, with sounds from cannon musical instrument and percussions correspondingly, but also with original music by the "Op3" band, who dressed this "banquet" of testimonies and history.
Marilena Liagri's choreographies enliven the dead relatives of the story's grandson Manolios, making the narrative heroes of his memory dance and coexist with him. The chase and the atmosphere elevate in the art videos of Dimitris Papadopoulos and the shooting and editing of Whitedogfilms.
