When your appetite urges you for Italian food in Nafplio, your choices are plenty. However, if you wish to taste authentic Italian, your choice is one: Itria Cucina Italiana Restaurant.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Bourtzi fortress is painted with shades of glory under the golden sunbeams. I take a stroll in the harbor amidst groups of tourists, friends and couples in love. One of them politely stops me and asks in English, if I know of any good Italian restaurant. Without hesitation, I recommend Itria and accompany them to the coastal Bouboulina Street, at No. 81. I have the fortune of knowing the owners of Itria, Elias and Stella Kokkoris, for years, since the time when their “Popeye” restaurant on Staikopoulou Street became a magnet for lovers of Italian cuisine. Later renamed to “Itria” and since August 2022, it moved here, where we find it today, on the enchanting Coastal road of the old town of Nafplio.

Place of pleasures, of unique aesthetics
The facade of the restaurant, adorned in ochre on the walls and cypress on the doors and windows, along with the minimalistic logo, bear the mark of understated beauty. In its outdoor space, wooden tables are filled with groups of friends enjoying their food and wine with the best view, the blue of the sea. The staff moves swiftly but discreetly, carrying plates with provocative scents for the nose and dishes set up both simple and masterful at the same time.
I step inside to greet the chef. I wonder how many of the customers sitting here now know, that Elias Kokkoris is one of the best chefs in Greece, teaches cooking at “Le Monde” school, and is a skilled connoisseur of Italian cuisine. As the chef smiles fleetingly while presenting a dish, I feel like I have an artist in front of me, completing his work with the last inspired touches.
Leaving Elias in his creative fervor, I turn my gaze to the understated interior design of the restaurant. The elongated, well-lit space bathes in natural light streaming through the large windows. The warm wood material adorns the floor, offering a familiar luxury to tables and chairs. I notice the creatively conceived domed ceiling and smile at the thick foliage placed on each table. In the background, elegant wooden furniture accommodates carafes, glasses and wine bottles in supine position.

Aperitivo per favore!
When my company arrives, I can't help but notice, that almost conspiratorially, we all behave as if we've gone on a weekend trip to Italy. This alone lifts my spirits and I order a nice aperitif. To my surprise, the staff suggests some exceptional cocktails, with the signature touch of Itria. We trust them, and soon a new dining philosophy unfolds before me. "From now on, I'll accompany my meal with a nice, fitting cocktail", I think to myself, as the jazz sounds sweetly intertwine with the clinking of glasses.

I miei complimenti allo chef! (My compliments to the chef!)
And while we always choose the same favorite salad -mixed with smoked salmon, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, Domokos cheese, hazelnuts, onion, and honey-mustard vinaigrette- I challenge my friends to order something different this time. We opt for a spinach salad with arugula, mushrooms, bacon, grilled artichoke, cherry tomatoes, gruyere cheese and orange vinaigrette, while our vegan friend in the group enjoys a quinoa salad with tender leaves, avocado, cherry tomatoes, grilled bell peppers and lime vinaigrette.
No one can resist a freshly baked warm bruschetta with crispy hearth-baked bread, infused with the aroma of garlic, fresh tomatoes, basil, and olive oil. Meanwhile, the more sophisticated taste bud in the group orders beef carpaccio with arugula and Grana Padano ice cream.
The kids persistently ask for pizza, and their favorite Margherita with tomato sauce and mozzarella, that arrived on warm, authentic Italian dough disappears before you can say delizioso! Among the 10 different pizza options, Margherita is undoubtedly our favorite, while personally, I have a weakness for the Marinara, with tomato sauce, mozzarella, anchovies, garlic, capers and fresh origan, as well as the Funghi pizza, with mozzarella, parmesan, mushrooms and truffle cream.
In an Italian place, we must have pasta! The variety is extensive: From Neapolitan Spaghetti, Amatriciana and Pesto, to Katsiatore Penne and Linguini with Salmon or Linguini with Botargo (fish roe). The latter, with botargo, zucchini, lemon, and prosecco sauce, seemed to speak to me; I couldn't ignore its call.
Regardless of your choice in pasta, one dish you shouldn't miss is Carbonara. Not the one you might have thought you knew, but the authentic Italian Carbonara with spaghetti, smoked pancetta, guanciale, egg, Parmesan, and Pecorino. A true revelation for the taste buds!
And if you want to delve further into authentic Italian cuisine, try a risotto, properly creamy, with wild mushrooms and truffle oil —I personally add a bit of extra fresh truffle.

Wine list: an oenophiles’ journey around the world
We perfectly accompanied our truly exceptional meal with wine labels from the Argolic vineyard, kindly suggested by the staff. Like any good restaurant that respects itself, Itria can rightfully take pride in its wine list, featuring selected labels from Greek winemakers, as well as a few Italian and French wines, that ease resistances and restraints. In the wine list, wines mainly from vineyards in the Peloponnese, along with some from Crete, Macedonia and Santorini, stand proudly alongside international choices, such as Bandol Rose Domaines Ott, Chateau Miraval Rose, Chianti Ricasoli and Jean Pierre Moueix Pomerol.

Passione
Savoring a dreamy, fluffy tiramisu, I pondered on what the secret of Itria is, that makes it so beloved among connoisseurs of fine cuisine. The answer is encapsulated in one word: Passion. Passion becomes the path, that leads to pure raw materials, rare ingredients, handmade pasta and sauces, the composition of ingredients into imaginative dishes and a respect for Italian gastronomic tradition. Itria was built with passion, and with the talent of Elias Kokkoris and the guidance of Stella's creativity, it is renewed, dares, and becomes not just a place, but an addiction that you crave more and more. Discover the magical world of Itria and surrender to the charm of its authenticity with all your senses!...

Did you know that?
A few words about its name: the restaurant was named Itria because it was the first pasta in history. According to texts from the 12th century by the Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi, in Palermo, Sicily, housewives made strands of dough called "itria." It was a type of pasta still produced today in Sicily, under the name "trio."
The word "itria" is speculated to originate from the Greek "ítrion." "Ítria" were flat cakes made of sesame and honey, a meal widely spread in Greece during that era.
If you are celebrating a unique moment or anniversary, choose one of the precious wines from the Itria cellar. Or opt for a sparkling wine or champagne from the vineyards of Arcadia and Amyntaio, including Prosecco Gancia, Moscato D’ Asti Gancia, Moet & Chandon, and Veuve Clicquot.
Vegans will find numerous options at Itria, and if you have any dietary preferences or intolerances, inform the staff and enjoy your dishes without worry. Don't forget to try the fresh pasta: potato gnocchi, ravioli, or basil-flavored mushroom pasta.
For meat enthusiasts, quality cuts and grills await you, such as beef fillet with truffle-scented mashed potatoes and demi-glace sauce, Rib Eye, Tagliata, Pork Rack Piccata. If you love fish, inquire about the fresh catch of the day.
The quality of the restaurant is high, but the prices are reasonable.
